Intern Java Developer (Mantis)

MANTIS is an analytical platform that supports Merck Manufacturing Division in transcending existing limitations and allowing users to work with data available in our company across the whole globe. The aim of the platform is to gather data from all the data sources that are affecting manufacturing (be it internal sources from manufacturing sites or from our external partners) and provide capabilities for users to explore the data, perform analysis, create dashboards and much more. These highly sought after capabilities allow our users to ensure that the manufacturing across the globe works smoothly and that our drugs are delivered to those in need on time. The product consists is built by using various technologies and tools, to name a few: ETL tools (Sqoop, Informatica), Scheduler (PDC), Hadoop Cluster, Teradata, Abstract.

As a Java Developer in our team you will

  • Deliver application that helps our scientists, researchers or data scientists understand the data related to drug research, manufacturing or sales form,
  • be part of and grow the Hadoop community in MSD
  • design and implement various layers of our product, including ingest pipelines, data modelling, data warehousing and business intelligence
  • work on testing and automation of our whole product
  • document how the product is developed and ensure that we abide by the Good Manufacturing Practices

What you really need for this job

  • Java is the core our our stack, we prefer Java 8 and Spring but any other version or flavour is also great
  • naturally, some scripting never hurts (Bash or Python)
  • be able to use SQL
  • never ever use a tab instead of spaces
  • amost of all, Interest in new technologies and willingness to learn
  • and most importantly, find a way to help resolve issues be it in IT or business

What we also do (and will be happy if you do too)

  • we integrate with Jenkins, but it’s not difficult to learn if you haven’t
  • we are using Hadoop, Hortonworks specifically, any hands-on with Hadoop is great
  • we’re building a search engine over our solution so if you have experience with ElasticSearch or Solr that will come in handy
  • the whole monster is running in AWS, so any experience with Amazon other than buying books will help
  • to be honest, pharmaceutical business is regulated because we are often dealing with sensitive patient or research data, you would be less surprised if you had previously worked in finance, banking or pharma
  • but it is not that bad, really!
