Senior Developer (JavaScript/TypeScript)

MSD is a global health care leader with a diversified portfolio of prescription medicines, vaccines and animal health products. The difference between potential and achievement lies in the spark that fuels innovation and inventiveness; this is the space where MSD has codified its 125-year legacy. MSD’s success is backed by ethical integrity, forward momentum, and an inspiring mission to achieve new milestones in global healthcare.

What you can expect?

Web & Mobile Apps is a group of 7 product teams. Our teams consist of 6 to 9 people in cross-functional setup including people with various competencies, Scrum Master and Product Owner. We like React a lot, but also like experimenting with other technologies. We like trying different approaches to achieve our goals, like TDD or mobbing. Most of our apps run in Docker and AWS.

As a Senior Developer you will be a member of a product team helping it working as good as possible. Your primary goal will be to solve business problems - primarily through designing, building and maintaining software products. You will help, teach and mentor your colleagues, actively contribute to architectural and design decisions, code reviews etc. You will mentor and teach others in various good coding practices, testing, quality, architecture or in creating reusable solutions. We expect every developer to produce quality code and improve quality continuously. We would be really happy if you would propose new technical solutions, try a new library or framework from time to time and through these experiments improve our software development competency in MSD further.

Together with the team you will help find solutions for user and business needs and propose good technical solutions.

We expect strong knowledge of different JavaScript frameworks or libraries, the most favourite at MSD currently is React so it would be good if we would share this passion. Other than that any tool you know is interesting for us starting with React Native, Jest, Mocha...you name it. But the most important for us is your interest and continuous learning and improving of the knowledge. In general T-shape knowledge is what we are after. Strong knowledge of JavaScript combined with broader overview of software development in general.
Do you like contributing to community? We would really appreciate if you could do a talk at our meetup or maybe help organising next JS hackathon.

Our expectations for your skills and experience

• We work in teams with close collaboration, so we expect you that you like to do pair programming, mobbing and discussing ideas with others
• You should have a deep knowledge of JS, but also with a broader understanding/knowledge of different programming languages, UX, devops etc. and not afraid to broaden your expertise in different domains
• You should be able to contribute to / drive architectural discussions and decisions
• It would be awesome if you had a good understanding and experience with emergent architecture
• It would be great if you had a good understanding of OOP
• It would be good if you know SQL and NoSQL databases
• Experience with test automation (at least functional: unit, integration, e2e...) - We find testing to be a very important way of building quality products and hope you do as well
• We understand that JavaScript landscape is changing with speed of light so we do not expect you to know everything but we value if you keep learning steadily
• Be open minded for various technologies, for example we use SharePoint as a platform for many products
• Practical experience with Agile and Scrum would be great

Technology stack we currently use

• JavaScript
• React
• Redux
• Node.js
• TypeScript
• Jest / Mocha
• etc....
• C#
• Robot framework
• Jenkins, Docker
• AWS & Azure
• SharePoint
• NERF

How will your day/week look like?

We use Scrum as a product development framework, so your day will likely start with a daily scrum. You will work in the product team and together with your colleagues deliver end to end solutions and you will be directly in touch with business. At the beginning you will have a buddy who will help you with practical stuff about working in MSD. We do code reviews across the whole community as it is a valuable source of knowledge for all of us. You can expect to see a couple of pull requests every day. We have regular community meetups, go for  beers or organise hackathons (to try something new, fail and cry about it).

Your role at MSD is integral to helping the world meet new breakthroughs that affect generations to come, and we’re counting on your skills and inventiveness to help make meaningful contributions to global medical advancement. At MSD, we’re inventing for life.
